DUBLIN

Ian Erskine sends news of Dublin Branch's 11th Golf Classic held on the 20th June at their regular venue, Donabate Golf Club. Again they enjoyed excellent weather, a feature of 'the Classic'. Competitors were also enjoyed for the first time the extensive facilities in the new multi-million Club House, which gives a great view of the 27 hole course.

On the day, 61 teams, including Ipswich regulars Watson and Hillhouse, teed off, a very satisfactory turn out. Organisation was, as usual, spearheaded by Gerry Cosgrave and David Taylor (who coincidentally is a Donabate member); Denis Kidney did his usual splendid job masterminding the production of the Classic brochure and selling advertising space. This handsome memento brings in close to a third of the net profit. John Kane took care of the remainder. As treasurer to the event, it is he who chases up payments and settles the bills. Other committee members, resplendent in their Lighthouse caps, helped out on the day. Continuing with their generous, and much appreciated, sponsorship were Irish Cement, Roadstone and John A Wood, all part of the CRH Group.
The first four places recorded 95 points:

  • 1st Roadstone Provinces, captained by their M.D Michael Grogan.
  • 2nd Door Plan captained by Peter Kenny.
  • 3rd William Cox captained by Peter Crowley.
  • 4th Watson and Hillhouse, captained by Robbie Watson.
  • 5th with 93 points, Friends First, captained by David Taylor.
  • 1st 9 Holes on a score of 49 were Pierce Contracting captained by John Cunningham.
  • 2nd 9 Holes with a score of 51 were Tracey Enterprises, captained by Gerry Fitzpatrick.
  • And finally a Special Prize went to Avis Fleet Services, captained by John O Callaghan.

Dublin's next event, (and one not to be missed, says your editor, speaking from experience), is the Annual Dinner and Auction to be held on friday 14th November at The City West Hotel and Leisure Centre in west County Dublin. Be there!
