FACT OR FICTION?

Teaching chemistry to 15 year olds these days raises more questions than the teacher can answer.  Did you know that the origin of the earth is now on the syllabus?
Yes…five billion years ago apparently, our universe came into existence, or so the textbook would have us believe.

Can you envisage how big five billion is? Well if we take just one millimetre and call that distance a year; how far do you think you would have to travel to get to this massive number.  Unbelievably walking round the world would not get you far enough because you would have to go to the moon and back five times to travel five billion millimetres.
Wow, I thought. This ‘New Chemistry’ is starting to get interesting because with numbers of this massive size the unbelievable may well happen. If one spins a coin a thousand times then the number of times the coin comes down heads or tails will be close to five hundred each. This experiment may take an hour to complete.  So, if one could spin a coin a thousand times hourly and continuously since creation then within that truly massive number of coin spins it would be within the bounds of chance that one group of a thousand coin spins would be a thousand heads (or tails.)

So it is just credible that using this theory of chance, the cooling simple gases that were to become our earth could have reacted together to form the complex molecules needed for life. On the other hand the simple water molecule was present at the beginning of creation. This incredible molecule uniquely associates with other water molecules to give a maximum density at four degrees C and so life can survive underwater even if the land is frozen. The bonding between water molecules ensures the fountain of life is a liquid and not a gas as are other similar sized molecules. Snowflakes are curious in that they have many intricate regular shapes depending mainly on the temperature gradient that caused the water vapour to freeze. I see the hand of the Creator being more important than leaving it to chance. Even if there were 5 billion billion chances, and you can add another billion or two if you like, but there are still too many patterns both intricate and elegantly simple in nature that can never be explained by chance or chaos theory.

That’s not to say that everything in nature is explicable by chance or by the hand of the Creator.
Well not just yet anyway.
The sixteen year olds' chemistry text book says, with lovely coloured diagrams, that the centre of the earth is a dense solid core of iron and nickel surrounded with more of these elements in an outer liquid form. This apparently explains why we have a magnetic field, but no way explains why this field has been reversing at pretty regular 500,000 year intervals. All very misleading - even with the technicolour diagrams...

Now we all know that even with the sun blazing away our earth should have lost its original immense heat to extremely cold deep space after about the first billion years. So what does our new brightly coloured text book say about this. It says the earth remains hot with liquid rock or magma pouring out of volcanoes because at the centre of the earth there is radio-active disintegration occurring.
Excuse me, is this a text book or a science fiction novel?
Is this a credible theory?
No it is not.

It is a fact that energy is still being generated inside the earth. With the zero gravity and the unbelievably immense pressures that exist at the centre of the earth there may well be some sort of unique new fusion, rather than fission reaction which is occurring at the centre of the earth but who knows.   Of course any fluctuations in energy output, even very small ones, from our internal earthly nuclear reactor or even from the sun itself would have a much more marked effect on temperature changes on the surface of our earth than we mortals have apparently caused by upping the CO2 percentage from 0.04 to 0.05%

Well I reckon they should rewrite their precious text books with all their unproven theories to include the fact that many of us sense an omnipotent omniscient presence. The fountain of all energy that transforms into matter and back to energy again and again and again.  The guardian of all the energy in all the universes has given us mere mortals the unique gift of wonderment and that didn’t happen by chance.
Did it?
